Colorful Wild Parakeets

A pair of Monk Parakeets also known as the Quaker Parrot.

I watched as they kept biting at the small limbs, and I wonder why?

Until I saw one with a stick in its beak, and another pull a strip of bark off a limb- both of them flew to a nearby Coconut Palm tree. Then I realized the birds were building a nest.
Monk Parakeet are the only parrots that build a stick nest rather than using a hole in a tree.

These birds are not native to Florida, but have established a feral population throughout Florida and several other states as far north as New York City. Florida is thought to have 100,000 of these smart- but oh so loud birds. More photos here

Cute looking birds. They look similar to a budgie.

I hope they are close enough for you to enjoy and maybe experience the babies when it's time.

They are pretty birds. I have always loved the Parakeets! I hope to see some in Florida during my trip. I have heard some were in Maryland, not sure where. Great photos!

How exciting to see them gathering sticks! Your photos have so beautifully captured their colors. I see them every once in a great while in this area. It always catches me by surprise to see this brightly hued feathered beauty!

Really nice shots, Pam!
It's always startling here in Florida to see a flash of green flying into a tree top!

I've heard we have them in Texas, too, but haven't seen them yet. Great shots.

Great looking birds - parrots are always fun to watch. They are also very intelligent.

Cheers and thanks for the link to WBW.

PS: are they native?

I had a Quaker once. The previous owner of the bird lived beside a fire station and the bird could do a perfect imitation of the sirens. He lived with us for several months before we couldn't take it anymore. We found a nice home for him in an outside aviary where, I'm sure, he awakened everyone, early!
